Overview
WT is a long-standing freight and logistics company, boasting over 35 years of experience, yet was still operating on Superbase — a legacy database last updated in 2003. While their onpremises hardware has become progressively more advanced, Superbase has not, meaning that it has become increasingly difficult to run it on their modern systems. Realizing that their legacy system was not only unreliable but also unsustainable, WT took the decision to partner with We Make Platforms and transition to a modern day, cloud-based scalable solution.
Challenges
The aging Superbase code presented significant challenges for WT. Some of these are listed below:
- System Maintenance Issues: The legacy system’s outdated architecture made it increasingly difficult to maintain. Lack of updates since 2003 resulted in compatibility issues with modern operating systems and hardware advancements.
- Operational Limitations: The reliance on on-premises servers tied the system to a specific location, limiting flexibility for remote work and seamless data sharing across teams.
- Data Vulnerabilities: Older systems often lack robust data security measures, leaving the company exposed to potential cybersecurity threats.
- Integration Barriers: Modern tools and applications could not be integrated into the existing Superbase framework, reducing operational efficiency and missing opportunities for automation.
- Dependence on Legacy Expertise: Fewer IT professionals have expertise in maintaining such outdated systems, making troubleshooting and modifications more challenging and expensive.
Our Proposed Solution
To address these challenges, our proposed solution includes:
- Cloud-Based Rebuild: Develop a cloud-hosted application that replicates the core functionalities of Superbase while introducing modern enhancements.
- Data Migration: Implement a secure and seamless migration of legacy data to the new platform, ensuring no data loss while modernizing data formats for enhanced accessibility and reporting.
- Custom Features: Build tailored modules for key operational needs, such as logistics planning and reporting, to better align with WT’s business goals.
- Enhanced Security Protocols: Leverage the latest in cloud security technologies, such as encryption and multi-factor authentication, to safeguard sensitive business data.
- Scalable Architecture: Design the platform to accommodate future growth, ensuring that WT can easily expand operations or integrate new tools without major system overhauls.
Expected Outcomes
By transitioning to a modernized cloud-based system, WT can expect the following:
- Improved Operational Efficiency: Automating manual processes and enabling access to real-time data will streamline workflows and reduce operational bottlenecks.
- Enhanced Accessibility: A cloud-based solution allows team members to access the system securely from anywhere, improving collaboration and responsiveness.
- Robust Data Security: With advanced encryption and regular security updates, the company’s data will be far better protected from unauthorized access or cyber threats.
- Future Proofing: The scalable architecture ensures the system will adapt to technological advancements and business growth, avoiding the pitfalls of stagnation experienced with the legacy platform.
- Reduced Costs: Eliminating the need for on-premises servers and reducing dependency on legacy IT expertise will lower long-term costs.
